Well apparently I'm kind of sick. Not the most fun thing to go through, especially when colleges don't exactly give out sick days.
My most recent EMS shift was last Saturday, and we were dispatched by Cornell Police officer for a bloody nose, but when we arrived on scene they radioed us and said they had controlled the bleeding and that we could 10-22 (disregard/cancel). Aye. I would have ran the call, too. The rest of the four hours were without event, but I did get a lot of homework done.
I went into Collegetown for a haircut on Sunday, but they were apparently too busy to take walk-ins. So I scheduled an appointment for this next Sunday afternoon. Then I went to lifeguarding--another uneventful two hours. Then my EMS meeting, where we got ice cream and met with the new Spring semester members. It's great not being a newbie anymore!
I had an EMT module exam... again pretty standard. It took only about an hour to finish, and we ended class at about 3pm. This Thursday I have a Physics prelim exam, which covers only the first 5 chapters of our mechanics course. That covers the basics of 2-dimensional motion, forces, vectors, etc. That's only about a handful of equations, so I'm expecting to do very well.
On Friday I have another overnight shift, again with the same trainee (who's also in my EMT class) but now with a different crew chief. Should be fun. Friday and Saturday overnights are averaging a good 2-3 EtOH calls, and sometimes an asthma attack thrown in. If that happens I sure hope we have the albuterol ready. Without it, we feel pretty useless.
I found out the coolest thing today! The Duffield Hall project (the new engineering building to be completed Spring '04) was actually designed by the architectural firm Zimmer Gunsul and Frasca, based out of--you guessed it--Portland, Oregon. Doesn't sound familiar? They designed the PDX glass canopy, OMSI, the Convention Center, as well as structures for Reed College, USC, Washington U., and many UC schools. What's even cooler... a high class landscaping firm, EDAW, will follow up with a complete renovation of the Engineering quad, to include regrading, new paths, seating, and lighting.
The whole purpose of Duffield is to cover up old buildings. I kid you not. It will situated right next to and on top of several buildings, covering their 1950's facade. The only bad thing is I will be around for about 2 months after its completion, then I leave. So to me, its entire purpose will be to hinder my travels to and from my engineering classes. From dorms to huge buildings--what I don't put up with for the benefit of future generations.
