Back into the swing of things here at Cornell. After a week of break, I think I've been refreshed enough to finish out the remaining 7 weeks.

I found out yesterday that I was denied an offer for an internship with the Beaverton IBM. Not entirely surprising, as there were less than a handful of positions for what was likely an applicant pool of a couple hundred students. I should feel lucky enough to have made it to the phone interview stage. From the sound of the interview, it seemed as if more preference would be given to upperclassmen, as well as individuals who already possessed a lot of technical knowledge. From what I learned about the new team in Beaverton, they have a lot of work to accomplish over the summer and have deadlines to meet. See the commercials with the stunned CIO's and the tagline, "Then it hits you; you are so ready for IBM."? That would be this team, Linux development. Unfortunately the verbal probing highlighted my lack of knowledge for Linux and corporate and server networking, likely making me a less desirable candidate than one who would walk in the door ready to work.

So it's not all that bad. I still have several opportunities open, and a few more companies to explore. And my non-internship backup plan includes pasting together a couple regular part time jobs to make a 40-hour week of lifeguarding and perhaps working as an EMT with Metro West Ambulance (serving Washington County) or with American Medical Response (downtown). I'd be able to make a healthy dollar and explore my interest in emergency medicine. It would also be an extension to my EMS experiences here in Ithaca, and would keep my EMT knowledge fresh.

I had a Math prelim exam on Tuesday evening, which I feel I did very well on. The prelim received a resounding reply from the students of being too hard. The key on this exam was to go through all of the questions to answer the easy ones first. Many students missed the final question (17 of the 100 points) completely, because of spending too much time on the harder previous questions. I'll receive my graded test back next Tuesday, and will be able to compare it with the course average.

And back to the EMS front here, I have two back to back overnight shifts on Friday and Saturday. So excluding tonight's action, I will be responding to nearly every EtOH call on campus this weekend. Hopefully none or relatively few between 4am and 11am when Aaron prefers to catch some shut eye.
