Phew! Zahrowski.com is back, alive and well. I was forced to pack up and leave since the company hosting the site decided to disappear overnight.
So it's been a couple weeks since my last entry...quite a long time! This entry could get to be a little long, but lots of good stuff has happened since the end of March. The school year is beginning to wind down now, and plenty of things are going on!
My double overnight EMS shifts turned out to be fun and productive. On Friday, we had no calls, and I finished a good amount of my homework that was due the following week. On Saturday, we received two calls, one MVA where the driver of one car complained of neck pain to the police officer 30 minutes after the accident. Unaware of the response he was getting, he really did not want to go to the hospital. Thankfully, the ambulance showed up only a few seconds after we arrived, so they were able to sign him off. The second call was an EtOH... pretty much your standard call. As an attendant now, I usually do only paperwork and question the patient and bystanders at times.
More recently (last Sunday), I was able to snag the attendant spot on a crew for the BB King concert. It was held in Barton Hall and attracted about 2,000 students and general public. We got one call to an individual who was apparently having an adverse reaction to antibiotics they were just prescribed. The Bangs standby crew transported her to the hospital. The concert was pretty cool, but very tame--what would you expect for blues fans, I suppose.
Starting next Monday, I will be one of many freshman up at 7:30am battling for a connection to Cornell's CoursEnroll servers. Indeed, the time has come again to preregister for next term's courses. My schedule's all lined up--I'll be taking about 18 credits with 17 hours of actual class time (compared to 23 hours of class time for 15 credits). My courses will include Physics E&M, advanced engineering Calculus, and a slew of electrical engineering lectures and labs. And, alas, a 9am class. Sigh.
I've received two prelim exams back this past week, both with good results. My physics exam was fairly difficult, but only I missed one part of one question, ending up with a score of 91. The mean, however, was 64. Not too shabby. And in math, my exam grade was 84, with a course mean of about 65. I think I'll be fine in those classes.
I'm chugging along in my writing seminar, too. Last week I gave a presentation on a cappella, with a general background, and detailed information and history on a few of the three most widely recognized a cappella groups. Remember the chant-like LifeSavers commercial? Recorded by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, a South African group formed in the 60's, more well known for their works than their name. They're also in Lion King II, and James Earl Jones' Cry the Beloved Country.
My last essay in the writing seminar was a bear, too. Even so, my experience of detailed analysis from last semester carried over, resulting in an excellent job. I suppose you could call that my grade, since we won't know our grade in that class until the end. The topic of this essay was comparing the literary works of two authors, one a musicologist and the other an "interested party with personal experience," on the transformation of the symphony audience... from a general public to the social and economic elite.
Last Sunday I got a haircut! Just thought you should know.
My EMT final exam is next Monday! This is the exam that determines whether or not I pass or fail the class itself. Although I will not be permitted to continue if I fail the class final, it has no bearing on the results of my state EMT certification exams. My state practical exam is April 21st (two Saturdays from now) at 1:00pm. We will be evaluated by people we don't know, and performing our skills on real people. This does determine whether or not I will become an EMT. Chances are good though, as the pass rate is nearly 100%. The state written exam is on the 10th of May.
That's all for now...
Aaron
