Oh yeah... Only the bottom Read more... link works. The rest will work when I eventually get to writing them. Summer
Break 20019/16/01 Update: I am now officially an Oregon EMT Basic #130159, effective September 14, 2001!
I've broken down my summer into neat little categories for your review, if you choose to do so (mom & dad), or for the rest of you, the overviews below should suffice.
Lifeguarding
at THPRD (read

From
the nearly first day back I began working at the 50 meter pool. I was able to
take on some temporary hours in the afternoons until the pool's summer schedule
started. In July, I started my normal schedule of Monday through Thursday 6:15pm
to 9:15pm and Saturdays 1:15pm to 6:15pm, totaling 17 hours per week.
Fire
Station
(read more...)
Long ago, I worked with an officer at the Somerset TVF&R
Station 64 (185th & 26) on a relatively new project to map site plans and
floor plans of buildings in the fire station's response area. Using a long outdated
draw program (even at the time), I spent two weeks drawing and perfecting a
plan for a company that now no longer exists. After one plan, the work was done.
About four years have passed since that time. When I returned from school, I
learned that the officer I worked with was now the station captain and the sole
person in charge of the new drawing program. This program has since expanded
to include all of the district's response area (100 square miles and 400,000
people). I was offered a job and this tallied another 30 hours per week onto
my work schedule. 8/30 Update Now that I leave,
I have learned I now have an official job title--Response Aid Specialist. Sounds
pretty good to me...[editing resume]
Vacay
to Grand Canyon
(read more...)
August 11-21...I spent several days visiting relatives in Southern California,
and the central part of my trip was spent on the Colorado River, at the bottom
of the Grand Canyon. My uncle, aunt, two cousins and I spent 4 days on the river
(rapids rated 10 for technical difficulty, of a possible 10), from Lee's Ferry
to Phantom Ranch, and ended the trip with a hike out of the Canyon on the South
Kaibab Trail--a vertical mile climb on a 7 mile trail (over 14% incline grade).
The Bright Angel Trail was the recommended route, but just days earlier the
trail had washed out. Here we were, hiking on the only alternative trail...one
that the river company had originally discouraged us from using.
Rides
with TVF&R, AMR (read

My goal this summer was to receive my Oregon EMT certification soon enough to
possibly work with one of the EMS providers in our area. Unfortunately the delay
from New York plus the 6-8 week turnaround time from Oregon EMS made this impossible.
As an alternative, I looked into the possibility of riding along with AMR and
TVF&R. I rode with AMR in downtown Portland one Sunday from 6pm through
6am, and TVF&R Engine 64 twice.
